Matrimonial and Divorce

Matrimonial law in the UK covers the legal aspects of marriage, including the requirements for getting married, the effects of marriage on property and finances, and the procedures for divorce and annulment.

Divorce

You can apply for a divorce if you’ve been married for over a year, your marriage has permanently broken down, and your marriage is legally recognised in the UK. The Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 introduced reforms to the divorce process, aiming to reduce conflict by removing the need to allege fault and allowing joint applications. It also established a minimum period of 20 weeks from the start of proceedings to the application for a conditional order, providing a period for reflection and planning.
